Square Footage Calculator

Calculate square feet and square meters for rooms, floors and other shapes. Combine multiple areas, subtract sections you want to exclude, and enter measurements in feet and inches or metric units. Add a unit price to estimate cost, then copy your results or download a CSV.

Calculate Your Area

How to Calculate Square Footage

  1. Choose a shape. Use the diagram to identify the dimensions you need. A square uses the rectangle mode with equal sides. If you already know an area, select Enter area directly and choose its area unit.
  2. Enter your measurements. Feet and inches have separate fields. For example, 12 feet 6 inches is 12.5 feet, rather than 12.6 feet. Metric measurements can be entered in meters, centimeters or millimeters.
  3. Combine sections. Add another area for each part of your space. Give it a name so you can check the breakdown. Use Quantity for sections with the same dimensions. Choose Subtract from total for a section you want to exclude.
  4. Calculate and review. Check the added area, subtracted area and net total. You can enter a price per square foot, square yard or square meter to estimate cost. Recalculate after changing any input before copying or downloading your CSV.

An Example with Multiple Areas

Suppose a room has a 12 × 10 ft section and a separate 6 × 5 ft section. Their areas are 120 ft² and 30 ft². A 3 × 2 ft recess that you want to exclude subtracts 6 ft², giving a net area of 144 ft², or approximately 13.378 m². At a user-entered rate of USD 2.50 per ft², the estimate is USD 360.00. This price is an illustration, not a material quote.

Measure Irregular Spaces in Sections

An L-shaped room can be divided into two rectangles. Curved spaces may be easier to describe with circles, rings or sectors. Keep sections separate so they do not overlap. The calculator adds and subtracts the areas you enter; it has no coordinates and cannot check whether a deduction sits inside a room or has already been counted.

For triangles, trapezoids and parallelograms, height means the perpendicular distance, not the sloping edge. A rectangle border uses outside length and width with one uniform border width. A ring uses outside and inside diameters. For a sector, enter a radius and its central angle, choosing degrees or radians explicitly.

Area, Unit Conversion and Purchasing

Areas are converted to square meters before they are combined. One international foot is exactly 0.3048 meters, so one square foot equals 0.09290304 square meters. One square foot also contains 144 square inches. Displayed values are rounded for reading; cost calculations use the unrounded net area. The final estimated cost is rounded to the currency's minor unit, with halfway amounts rounded up.

The net area is geometric coverage, not a finished order quantity. Cutting, overlaps, spare material, package sizes and installation layouts can change how much material you need. Check those separately against the selected product. Measurements here also do not establish a property's official recorded floor area.

Square Footage Questions

How do I calculate the square footage of a room?

For a rectangular room, measure the length and width in feet and multiply them. A room that is 12 feet long and 10 feet wide has an area of 120 square feet. For a room with several sections, calculate each section and add the areas.

How do I calculate an L-shaped or irregular area?

Divide the space into simple shapes that do not overlap, then add their areas. Use a subtract area for a section you want to exclude. Check your measurements and avoid counting the same section twice.

Can I use feet and inches or metric measurements?

Yes. Enter dimensions in feet and inches or select a metric length unit. The calculator converts the measurements before combining areas and shows the result in square feet and square meters.

Does the result include material waste or the number of boxes to buy?

The result is the geometric area from your measurements. It does not include cutting waste, spare material, overlaps, or packaging. Work out those allowances using the selected material and installation layout before placing an order.

How is the estimated cost calculated?

Enter your own price and select its area unit. The calculator multiplies the net area by that rate. The estimate covers only what your rate includes; taxes, labor, delivery, and other charges are not added automatically.
