Tile Calculator
Estimate tiles and whole boxes for floors and walls. Plan a layout with openings and reusable cuts, compare four patterns, and add your prices to estimate the material cost.
Calculate Your Tiles
How the Estimate Works
Area or Layout
Use Total area when you know the net area to cover. It estimates quantities from tile size and grout joints without modeling boundary cuts or reusing offcuts. Choose Dimensions and layout to include the pattern, starting point, openings, and reusable cuts. For L-shaped areas, combine rectangles within one area; overlaps count once. Need to measure your space? Use the Square Footage Calculator.
Cuts, Extras, and Boxes
The area estimate applies percentage extras before rounding each area to whole tiles. A layout adds extras after calculating cutting and reuse. Both round the combined quantity up to whole boxes for each tile type. Keep different sizes, colors, and batches separate.
For example, 20 m² with 600 × 600 mm tiles, no grout joint, 10% extra, and four tiles per box gives 62 tiles needed and 16 boxes to buy: 64 tiles, covering 23.04 m² of tile faces.
Check Before Ordering
Enter actual tile dimensions. Set grout joints, perimeter gaps, and blade width for your installation; zero means no allowance. Confirm offset patterns with the manufacturer. Cutting plans respect rotations and factory edges but do not guarantee minimum waste, continuous vein matching, or machine-ready cuts. Layouts support up to 5,000 tile positions per calculation.
Cost uses your prices for the tile quantity purchased. Labor, adhesive, grout, delivery, tax, and currency conversion are excluded. Copy and CSV use the current result; changing an input requires recalculation. Inputs are not saved after a refresh.
Tile Calculator Questions
How many tiles do I need?
Enter the area, actual tile dimensions, and grout joint. In Total area mode, a percentage allowance is applied before rounding to whole tiles; a fixed extra quantity is added afterward. Choose Dimensions and layout to account for the pattern, openings, and reusable cuts. Whole-box quantities also require tiles per box.
Can I calculate floor and wall tiles for several areas?
Yes. Add an area for each floor or wall section and assign a tile type. Keep different sizes, colors, or batches as separate tile types, even when dimensions match. Purchasing totals stay separate by type. Each area has its own layout; mixed-size patterns within one area are not supported.
Which tile patterns can I plan?
Choose Dimensions and layout for straight, running bond, 45° diagonal, or herringbone patterns. Running bond supports half, third, and custom offsets. Herringbone requires rectangular tiles in two perpendicular directions. Confirm the permitted offset and grout joint with your tile manufacturer.
Can I include L-shaped rooms and openings?
Yes. Build a rectangular, L-shaped, or combined rectangular area, then enter the dimensions and positions of openings that will not be tiled. Overlapping parts of the same area or opening are counted once. Opening positions affect which tiles are cut, so subtracting an opening's area alone does not determine the detailed tile count. Separate areas keep their own coordinates.
Does the calculator reuse offcuts?
Yes, in Dimensions and layout. An offcut can supply a piece if its shape, size, blade allowance, permitted rotation, and factory edges are compatible. Reuse defaults to areas using the same tile type; limit it to one area or turn it off under Layout Options. The cutting plan identifies each piece’s source. It does not guarantee the fewest tiles.
What is the difference between grout joints, edge gaps, and cutting allowance?
A grout joint is the spacing between tile faces. Perimeter and opening gaps are separate spaces at the boundaries of the tiled area. Cutting allowance, or kerf, is material lost to the cutting tool and does not add coverage. Enter each value separately. A perimeter or opening gap of zero means no gap has been allowed for in the calculation; use the values required for your tile, substrate, and installation.
How are extra tiles and whole boxes calculated?
In Total area mode, percentage extras are applied to each area before rounding to whole tiles; fixed extras are added to each area’s rounded count. In Dimensions and layout, extras are added after calculating the tiles needed for cutting and reuse. Quantities are then combined by tile type and rounded up to whole boxes. Spare tiles and tiles added by box rounding are separate. Box quantities remain uncalculated without tiles per box.
Can I lock the tile direction or preserve factory edges?
Yes. Set Allowed rotations and Keep factory edges under Cutting and Reuse. Herringbone requires two perpendicular tile orientations, so a conflicting direction lock must be changed. Only factory edges retained from the source tile count. The tool does not flip tiles over or match continuous veining.
Does the cost include installation?
The budget covers tile material using your price per tile, per box, or per unit of purchased tile area. It uses one currency and does not convert exchange rates. Labor, adhesive, grout, delivery, and taxes are not added automatically. Missing prices or packaging information are listed, and a known cost subtotal is kept separate from a complete material budget. This is a calculation from your inputs, not a supplier quotation.
